Why Tamilians Still Drink Pepsi and Coca-Cola Despite Health Risks
Habits die hard. Our decision to boycott Pepsi and Coca-Cola has been a gradual process, with many factors contributing to its continued consumption by the Tamilophone population. Notably, lack of unity, the absence of a suitable alternative, and the accessibility and affordability of these beverages play significant roles.
Market Dynamics
Availability and affordability remain key issues. A single tender coconut costs Rs.35/ on the roadside, with each fruit picked from the tree valued at Rs.20. The sky-high price includes labor, transportation, profit margins of wholesalers, and ultimately, the vendor. This year, a severe drought in many parts of Tamil Nadu (TN) has led to a scarcity of locally harvested coconuts, with the majority available from Coimbatore district.
While social media campaigns and health advocates have sought to highlight the negative health impacts of soda, their message has not been universally heeded. Social responsibility, from an individual perspective, appears to fall short in convincing people to switch. As one roadside coconut vendor pointed out, people often prioritize immediate satisfaction over long-term health concerns.
Health Concerns and Addictiveness
The consumption of Pepsi and Coca-Cola continues partly due to the absence of perceived alternatives, coupled with the addictive nature of these beverages. The high sugar content and artificial additives in these sodas can lead to a range of health issues such as obesity and cholesterol problems. Additionally, the presence of caffeine can contribute to a level of addiction, making it difficult for many to give up these beverages.
Notably, campaigns by health volunteers and social responsibility advocates have pointed out that these sodas contain 14 different types of pesticides, further adding to the health concerns. Despite these risks, people often overlook the potential long-term consequences, drinking on impulse to quench thirst without considering subsequent health issues.
Personal Experiences and Advocacy
My own journey away from Pepsi and Coca-Cola began long ago; these carbonated drinks no longer appeal to me due to their irritating effects on my throat. I have consistently advocated for healthier alternatives, emphasizing the need to avoid such beverages in favor of fruit juices, which offer health benefits without the negative side effects.
It's worth noting that despite the health risks, many people identify with and consume these sodas despite the odds. The fact that Coca-Cola and Pepsi are used as toilet cleaners in certain areas underscores the notion that they are predominantly viewed as fillers rather than beneficial beverages. In reality, these drinks are essentially useless acids with caffeine, which our bodies do not readily accept.
Call to Action
I strongly urge all individuals, including those from Tamil Nadu, to reconsider their consumption of carbonated drinks. Health is paramount, and making the switch to more nutritious alternatives could have a significant positive impact on overall well-being. Fruit juices, for example, offer natural sweetness, vitamins, and minerals, while minimalizing the risks associated with high sugar and artificial additives.
To those who still consume Pepsi and Coca-Cola, consider the long-term benefits of making this change. By shifting to healthier beverage choices, you can reduce the risk of obesity, cholesterol problems, and other associated health issues. It may take a conscious effort, but the benefits are well worth the transition.
