Why I Choose the Maybank2Card Gold AMEX and My Experiences with Different AMEX Cards
Over the years, I have had the privilege of using different AMEX cards, and it is through these experiences that I have come to have a clearer understanding of what type of card suits my needs best. My journey with AMEX cards has been fascinating, and I would like to share my insights with you, particularly focusing on the Maybank2Card Gold.
The Evolution of My AMEX Card Usage
My first experience with an AMEX card was during my time working for a company. The card was a business-only company card that was issued to me for use during business trips. The company's policy was straightforward: we used the AMEX card, and that was it. I held this card for a considerable period, simply because it was required for my job. When I left the company, I also left the card behind. Even then, I never encountered any issues with the services provided by AMEX.
My second experience came when I joined Costco, which had a deal with AMEX for their members. This card, too, was linked to my membership and provided the convenience of shopping with a preferred card. However, when Costco ended the deal, I canceled my AMEX card. Both of these cards offered excellent services, and I never had any troubles with them.
Post-Retirement: A New Perspective
Since retiring, my relationship with AMEX cards has changed significantly. In my pre-retirement days, I would often use a corporate Gold card for my business expenses. However, since retiring, I no longer require such a card. The commission that AMEX charges retailers has made their cards less popular, as other cards like MasterCard and Visa have lower fees. I now stick to cards from my bank and a Zero card which does not charge any commission for currency exchange when used abroad.
The Maybank2Card Gold and Its Drawbacks
Currently, I carry a card that is a part of the Maybank2Card Gold, where the bank offers two cards, one of which is an American Express card. I must say that while this card is one of the available options, I hardly use it. In fact, I almost never use it. I accept it as part of the deal because it is a take-it-or-leave-it proposition.
While the Maybank2Card Gold is free for life, the fact that I hardly use it is an understatement. One of the reasons I retain this card is its convenience as a backup option. However, it is not a card that I turn to for regular use due to its minimal benefits. The primary reason for its retention is the lifetime offer, which outweighs the minimal usage.
Conclusion
In sum, my journey with AMEX cards has taught me that the choice of a credit card is often a balance between convenience, fees, and usage. Whether it's the corporate card for business expenses or a personal card for leisure, the key is to choose a card that aligns with your lifestyle and needs. The Maybank2Card Gold, while free for life, may not be worth the storage space if it is not used often. For me, it serves as a reminder of the varied options available, and it helps in making informed decisions when it comes to choosing a credit card for future needs.
