Punjab's Strategic Move: A Boost for Kinnow Export Marketing
Punjab, the agricultural powerhouse of India, is gearing up to revolutionize the export of Kinnow, a globally recognized citrus fruit. During a recent workshop, the Chief Minister of Punjab, Parkash Singh Badal, announced a significant initiative to facilitate the distant marketing and export of Kinnows. This move is expected to ensure remunerative prices for growers and promote the global competitiveness of this fruit.
Government Support and Infrastructure
Mr. Badal, in his address, emphasized that the state government is committed to providing the necessary infrastructure and marketing support to Kinnow growers. The government has allocated a substantial sum of Rs. 14 crore to support distant marketing and export initiatives. This funding will help in addressing the logistical challenges associated with exporting Kinnow to distant markets.
Permission for Fungicide Laden Wax
A critical issue raised by growers and exporters was the necessity for fungicide-laden wax to meet international standards. The Chief Minister assured that the matter would soon be taken up with the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India (GoI), to grant permission for the use of fungicide-laden wax in accordance with international norms. This step is crucial for better shelf life and aesthetic appeal, enhancing the Kinnow's marketability globally.
Special Air-Conditioned Rakes for Rail Transport
Another significant announcement was regarding the acquisition of special air-conditioned rakes from the Ministry of Railways. These rakes will enhance the export potential of Kinnow, allowing faster and more efficient shipment to southern parts of the country and beyond. The Chief Minister stressed that these rakes would be sanctioned well in advance of the marketing season, ensuring timely and efficient transportation.
Rumur Chand Chamber: A New Initiative
To address the broader agricultural needs, the Punjab Kisan Vikas Chamber has been established. This chamber, modeled after prestigious organizations like FICCI, CII, and ASSOCHAM, aims to provide recommendations and suggestions on various issues related to agriculture and allied farming. The chamber will serve as a platform for farmers to raise their concerns, and engage renowned agriculture experts for advisory services. Legal advice on contentious issues related to inter-state marketing and export policies will also be sought to ensure farmers' interests are protected.
Progressive Farmer Training and Knowledge Upgradation
Agricultural expertise is crucial for improving the quality and marketability of Kinnow. To this end, Mr. Badal announced plans to send progressive farmers in horticulture, agriculture, and allied farming abroad. This initiative aims to bring them up to date with the latest farming techniques and technologies, enhancing their export potential. This workshop and training program will significantly improve the production, grading, waxing, and packaging of Kinnow, enabling it to fetch better prices in the global market.
Local Producers and Exporters' Engagement
The Honourable Chief Minister also underscored the importance of local producers and exporters. Representatives from the Punjab Agro Industries Corporation, Punjab Agri Export Corporation Limited, and prominent kinnow growers and exporters were present at the event. They expressed their satisfaction with the government's initiatives and the prospects of enhancing export targets, with an aim to reach at least 15,000 MT this year from the current 5,000 MT exported in the previous year. The significant buyers and growers present include Mr. Kulwant Singh Chauni, MD of Punjab Agro Juices Limited, and Mr. Surinder Charaya, a renowned kinnow exporter.
With these strategic moves, Punjab is positioning itself to become a leading exporter of Kinnow. The initiatives underscore a concerted effort to address the needs of farmers and ensure that they can compete on an international level.
