Personal Growth and Community Service During the Pandemic
During the global pandemic, many individuals have found themselves having to adjust to a new normal. For me, this meant transitioning to a work-from-home situation due to my role as a preschool teacher. While the change was initially challenging, I soon realized that I could use this time to give back to my community in meaningful ways. This article will explore my journey of personal growth and community service during the pandemic.
The Pandemic's Impact on Daily Life
With the onset of COVID-19, I found my world shrinking as I stayed at home more often. As a preschool teacher, I spent 30 years at the same school, and the sudden change in routine was disheartening. I felt like I had vanished, like I had just disappeared without a trace. My days were filled with mundane tasks such as doing laundry, cooking, and cleaning, while I occasionally entertained myself with cardio workouts on my recumbent bike. My sleep patterns also struggled, as I went to bed late and woke up even later, creating a rollercoaster of emotions and unpredictability.
Giving Back During Times of Crisis
Recognizing the need for a sense of purpose and contribution, I sought out ways to give back to my community. One platform that caught my attention was the Montrealers Helping Montrealers Facebook group. Here, I discovered a community that was actively seeking to support those in need during these challenging times.
Supporting Women in Battered Women’s Shelters
I participated in a project organized by the group to collect essential items for women residing in battered women's shelters. These items included purses, boxes of tissues, hairbrushes, elastics, socks, and hygiene products. I gathered items from my home and purchased additional products to augment my donations. This act of kindness filled me with a sense of purpose and value. Furthermore, I made a commitment to communicate with the organizer on an ongoing basis, offering any assistance I could provide.
Helping the Homeless Population
Another way I found to contribute was to support the homeless individuals living in an area known as "Tent City," where up to 200-300 people reside. The harsh winter conditions in Montreal made it particularly dangerous for this vulnerable population. With this in mind, I diligently sorted and packaged essential items such as towels, sheets, pillows, warm clothing, and blankets. I prepared 12 large bags of donations, which were then delivered to a lady who was already collecting donations from the community.
Providing Fresh Produce and Tasty Meals
My latest project involved preparing 100 bags of fresh vegetables with dip for the residents of Tent City. The people in this area primarily consume carb-based foods such as sandwiches, pizza, and granola bars. Therefore, providing fresh produce was a real treat for them. My final task was to prepare 150 peanut butter and Nutella sandwiches, which are not typically available to this population. These meals not only provided a healthy option but also brought joy and appreciation.
Conclusion
I have found immense satisfaction in these acts of giving, which have helped me feel productive and of value. The pandemic has provided a unique opportunity to connect with my community in meaningful ways. I look forward to continuing these efforts, especially during the winter months when bringing prepared food would be particularly helpful. I am truly grateful for the chance to be involved in such an amazing group that fosters a sense of unity and purpose.
