Navigating Online Scams: A Personal Journey
Online scams are a growing concern in today's digital world. From tech support scams to phishing orchestrated by Nigerian scammers, experiencing these deceptive practices can be incredibly frustrating and costly. In this article, I share my worst online scam experiences, offering insights on how to avoid falling victim to scammers and stay safe online.
Productivity Ruined by Scammers
"My phone kept on restarting and I needed a way to restore the settings. I found someone online who said he could help for a small fee." This was the beginning of my worst online scam experience. After searching for assistance, I was directed to some dubious links, which, despite my skepticism, I clicked.
The links led me to:

This experience taught me that staying away from online scammers is crucial. Always verify the legitimacy of the service before clicking any links or providing personal information.
Unlucky Encounters with Scammers
Another encounter with online scammers came in the form of a cash for your address scheme. A Nigerian individual contacted me, offering to use my bank account to transfer his alleged fortune out of the country. The email was written in broken English and printed on cheap paper. Despite the red flags, the scammers were persistent, hoping for a naive victim.
Another scam involved a tenant wanting to rent an apartment by sending me a check for three times the rent. I proposed meeting in person to avoid a financial fraud, but the tenant was unwilling to do so. The lack of trust on both sides led to the end of the potential rental agreement. This experience highlighted the importance of verification and communication principles in avoiding scams.
Government Mandated Systems: A Bittersweet Sacrament
The government's Social Security System (SSS), Philhealth, and PAGIBIG are mandatory systems in the Philippines. These systems are designed to provide personal and medical insurance, but many find them lacking in value. Compared to other insurance and loan companies, these government-mandated systems offer significantly lower returns and inconvenient access to benefits.
While these systems are government-mandated and have been in place for generations, their effectiveness is often questionable. I have experienced some relief through these programs, but overall, they seem to be designed to keep people in the cycle of dependency rather than providing substantial financial support. As a society, we must critically evaluate and seek better alternatives.
In conclusion, navigating online scams requires vigilance and skepticism. Always verify the legitimacy of any online offer, whether it's tech support, a financial opportunity, or a rental agreement. Be cautious, stay informed, and protect yourself from becoming a victim of online scammers.
