My Career Journey: From Fast Food to Freelance Writing
Have you ever had a regular job? If so, you might resonate with my own journey. It certainly has been anything but regular. My career path has been as varied as it has been enjoyable.
Fast Food Days
During my college days, I worked at McDonalds for six years. Working in a fast food joint during those formative years was not just a job; it was a blast. The energy, the people, the instant satisfaction of providing delicious food to busy students and office workers—it was all simply exhilarating. I wouldn’t have traded those six years for anything.
From Fast Food to Movie Theater
After my McDonalds stint, I explored the world of the movie theater. Managing a theater was a different ballgame. It involved coordinating with distributors, arranging screenings, managing staff, and ensuring the best possible experience for patrons. It was challenging but utterly rewarding.
Prepress Pioneering
My next stop was the world of prepress. For a long time, I specialized in creating prepress materials, preparing designs for printing. This phase of my career was both fascinating and exasperating. The attention to detail, the technical challenges, and the creative potential made it worth every second.
Entrepreneurial Ventures
Fueled by the success and financial stability of my prepress work, I ventured into the world of computer consulting. For a while, I did quite well. The venture allowed me to leverage my technical skills and offer valuable services to clients. However, after a few years, I realized that consulting wasn’t my true calling. The paperwork, the endless meetings, and the constant need for networking took its toll. I left this phase of my life behind.
Rebirth in Freelance Writing
WIth the consulting business behind me, I sought a new path. I became a minority partner in a fascinating company that manufactured industrial lightning detection equipment. But when the business took a downturn, I was left with a sinking feeling. It was a painful end, but it was also the beginning of a new chapter. I decided to go back into consulting, only to realize once again that it wasn’t my true passion. Insufficient.
Final Chapter: Writing
Now, here I am, a writer. No, I didn’t wake up one day and make the decision to write full time. It was a gradual evolution. I loved the research, the storytelling, the art of crafting compelling narratives. It was a natural progression for me. The freedom, the creativity, the opportunity to explore diverse subjects—these are all things that make writing an ideal career for me. It’s not just a job; it's a passion.
Lessons Learned
Looking back, I’ve learned that the journey is as important as the destination. Each job I’ve taken has contributed to my personal and professional growth. It’s about the experiences, the lessons, and the self-discovery. For me, being a writer allows me to tell stories, share insights, and inspire others. It’s a journey that continues, with each day offering new opportunities and challenges. So here’s to my career, no matter what the twists and turns, I’m grateful for every step of the way.
