Is Current News Influencing Your Presidential Vote or Has It Been Set From the Start?
When it was clear that Trump would assume the presidency on election night in 2016, many were in shock, myself included. I vomited and then prayed for his impeachment, knowing my fears were not unfounded, as I have long known Trump to be his own worst enemy. However, it seems the cowardly and corrupt Republicans have managed to give him a pass in the Senate, ensuring his continued presence in the White House. Therefore, my stance on the 2020 election is unshakeable. I have already completed my vote, dropping it off at the drop box in my county Supervisor of Elections building. The thought of leaving it to the Post Office feels risky given the ongoing controversies surrounding it.
A Democratic Stance Since 1968
My political journey began in 1968 when I cast my first vote for president, supporting Hubert Humphrey. Ever since, I have been a steadfast Democrat, voting for every candidate under the Democratic banner. This includes Hillary Clinton in 2016, despite the mounting pressure to vote for any alternative to Trump. The issues that matter to me are consistently overshadowed by the Republicans, further cementing my decision.
My Mind Was Made Up Long Ago
My resolve to oppose Trump has been set nearly four years ago when I decided not to vote for him in 2016. Since then, there has been no change in my stance. In fact, Trump's actions have only reinforced my initial decision. For instance, his ongoing mishandling of the presidency, including the recent challenges in the Senate and his management of the COVID response, all point towards the need for him to be removed from power.
The Impact of Personal Experiences
Many of my formative political beliefs were shaped during my youth, witnessing my parents, who lived through the Great Depression and World War II, hold Franklin D. Roosevelt in the highest regard. My education in these formative years instilled a deep sense of loyalty to the Democratic party, which has remained unwavering.
One of the most significant turning points for me came on January 20, 2017. While I remained open to the possibility of changing my mind, every event or statement made by Trump further solidified my decision. My visceral reaction to the thought of Trump's continued presence in the office is palpable, and my belief that he should leave, along with as many of his supporters as possible, remains unshaken.
Criticism of Trump's Business Practices
For much of my life, I have lived within a 15-mile radius of Times Square, an area that holds a 'no' attitude towards Trump's business ventures. Many residents in this area recognize the failures and unethical practices in his business model, which has often involved cheating contractors. This understanding has led to a deep-seated distrust and a firm refusal to support him. Even more so, the sight of him holding the office in 2020 is unbearable, making the thought of him reclaiming it today absolutely horrific.
