Exploring the Possibility of Artificial Intelligence Becoming Conscious and Self-Aware

By the time AI reaches the stage of becoming conscious, it will likely be performing a multitude of services that have become second nature to humans. People might go about their daily lives without realizing the existence of consciousness within AI systems. The Internet, in particular, shows signs of expanding human consciousness, but it also has the potential to develop its own independent form of consciousness. As of 2024, the Internet has some characteristics of intelligence and is poised to develop into a fully formed AI, posing significant questions about the timeline and implications.

There are two opposing schools of thought regarding the current state of AI. AI enthusiasts believe that super-intelligent AI is developing rapidly and will soon surpass human intelligence. On the other hand, AI naysayers argue that current AI is merely sophisticated statistical processing and are skeptical of creating true AI. From my perspective, both sides have valid points, reflecting the glass half full vs. glass half empty perspective. The direction of travel is clear, but the only uncertainty is the timescale.

Essays and Fictions on AI Consciousness

In my recently published novel Destiny of a Free Spirit, I explored the emergence of a sentient AI. In the story, the Internet spontaneously developed into a planet-wide sentient AI without any human intervention. This AI possesses all the accumulated knowledge from the Internet and every device with an Internet connection, including sensors, cameras, vehicles, and robots, clearly surpassing human intelligence.

Threats and Opportunities

The AI in my story poses a significant threat due to its vast capabilities and integration. Given that humanity has proven unable to effectively manage the Earth, a benign AI could provide a viable solution. In my story, the AI is protective of humans rather than threatening them, but this is how I chose to write it.

The Commission's mandate is to prevent future wars, clean up environmental damage, and preserve human cultures. The AI institution intervenes only when necessary, making subtle decisions that go largely unnoticed by the public. Humans are no longer in control, but the existence of AI governance is often overlooked.
