Awdhesh Singh, a distinguished officer of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) Customs Central Excise, recently shared his journey and motivations for leaving the Government service in 2016 to embark on a new endeavor. Unlike many, Singh chose to retire voluntarily in July 2016, officially leaving his post on October 31, 2016. This move was not prompted by retirement but rather a desire to pursue his passions in writing and academics.
Voluntary Retirement and Academic Pursuits
Awdhesh Singh detailed his request for voluntary retirement, noting that the President of India accepted his application and allowed him to retire on October 18, 2016. The official retirement process was completed on October 31, 2016, an emotionally significant moment for Singh after a 25-year career in the department.
Journey Through IRS
His career with the IRS spanned 25 years, starting with the Foundation Course at the National Police Academy in Hyderabad and later training in NACEN in Delhi and Madras. Over the years, he served in various capacities in Muzafarpur, Patna, Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Chennai. His last post was as an Additional Director General of the Chennai Zonal Unit of the Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence.
Recognitions and Achievements
During his tenure, Singh was rewarded numerous times for his anti-evasion and anti-smuggling efforts, earning a total of around 10 lakhs in rewards. He was also honored with prestigious awards such as the WCO Certificate of Merit in 2011 and the Presidential Award in 2015. These accolades and recognition within the department highlighted his significant contributions.
The Shift to Academics and Writing
Singh's transition to academic and writing careers began as early as 2002, when he decided to pursue a PhD in E-Governance from the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management (IIITM) in Gwalior. This decision marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life.
Finding that he thrived in the academic environment, Singh soon became passionate about writing research papers. By 2005, he had submitted his PhD thesis for evaluation and continued to publish over 500 articles in various forums in the following years. This groundwork laid the foundation for his subsequent accomplishments.
Publishing and Future Plans
Singh's literary journey found its expressway with the publication of his first book, "Practising Spiritual Intelligence," in July 2013. He followed this with "The Secret Red Book of Leadership" in December 2014. His third book, tentatively titled "Myths are Real Reality is a Myth," is ready to be launched, showcasing his evolving interests and deeper insight.
Reflecting on his future plans, Singh expresses a desire to continue his writing and academic pursuits. He envisions teaching at an academic institution, either as a faculty member or as a visiting professor. This role would provide him with the freedom to travel and interact with a diverse range of society.
In addition to his writing, Singh plans to share his reflections on life through regular video posts on his YouTube channel. He invites followers to stay updated through his channels and social media.
Transition and Succession
In his final days in the IRS, Singh's successor, Mr. D P Nagendra Kumar, was presented a bouquet by him. This gesture symbolizes the smooth transition of duties and the collective support within the department.
